2009-2010 USA Classification with Birth years
June 23, 2009Summary of Practice Friday, 27 February
March 1, 2009- Getting Up Drill: Make sure that our skaters are able to get up and emphasis on getting up quickly.
- Skating Drills: Work on fundamentals: Ready position, forward skating, 1 & 11 o’clock stop.
- Puck Drills: To maximize individual experience handling the puck and maximize the number of touches. Every skater carries puck cross ice & back. Coaches work with individual skaters to correct grip & dribbling technique. Break into 3 groups and work on puckhandling skills.
Notice during the cross-ice games at the end of practice that no one gets much practice carrying the puck. Even the more skilled players don’t get many touches.
George Kingston study of hour long. running time, full-ice Mite game (1976) found that on average a player had possession of the puck for 20.7 seconds. Top National Hockey League and international professional players were also timed and no player exceeded 85 seconds of puck possession time. In a sixty-minute children’s game the actual playing time of the game was 20 minutes and 38 seconds.

Ice Chips. Ice Chips are skaters eight years old and up who often are just starting hockey & are not ready to play on teams in their age classification. Ice Chips provides small group of one-on-one instruction to help these skaters develop skating, passing, and shooting skills so they can compete against their peers. James & Alex are Ice Chips. James skated with devos since November and Alex began two weeks ago. As of last Saturday, the Director of Coaches, Mike Wargolet has assumed leadership of the Ice Chip program & will run it with volunteer coaches completely independently of devos. Ice Chips will share ice time with devos, but will work with their own volunteer coaches.
Handicapped Parking. About one third of the parking places closest to the doors are reserved for the vehicles with handicapped permits. Don’t park in handicapped spots or risk getting ticketed or towed.
More Ice Time.
Mike Wargolet, asked if devos wanted ice time in March. Cheryl Krogman offered devos ice on Friday night 27 March. Details will follow when I learn more. Correction: Friday, 27 February.
Details will follow when I learn more. [for most recent schedule info, see recent posts.]

Subject: GENDER EQUITY POLICY – Co-Ed Locker Rooms
The issue of co-ed dressing arrangements in locker rooms continues to come up, and USA Hockey is frequently asked to provide some type of guideline about dealing with such situations.Teams, leagues, associations and USA Hockey need to recognize that there are gender equity issues to deal with when managing a co-ed locker room setting. Both female and male privacy rights must be given consideration and appropriate arrangements made.
USA Hockey’s member organizations should consider the following:
1. Recognize that it is an issue that must be dealt with and that favoring one group over another can produce legal ramifications;
2. Recognize that the ideal situation of using two, separate dressing rooms is not possible in many ice rink/arena settings;
3. Recognize that it is an issue that will increase in visibility as girl’s/ women’s participation in USA Hockey continues to grow; and
4. Recognize that it is an issue for members who are participating as players, coaches and officials. Our recommendations, made in conjunction with the Girls’/Women’s Section, the Coaching Education Program and the Officiating Program, are as follows:
NOTE: Make certain that two properly screened adults are present in locker room settings to supervise. Arrange to provide supervisors who are of the same sex as the children they are to protect. Please follow Coaching Ethics guidelines.
A. Where possible, have the male and female players undress/dress in separate locker rooms; then convene in a single dressing room to hold the coach’s pregame meeting;
B. Once the game is finished, hold the coach’s post game meeting; then have the male and female players proceed to their separate dressing rooms to undress and shower (separately), if available.
C. In those cases where separate facilities are not available, have one gender enter the locker room and change into their uniforms. That gender then leaves the locker room, while the other gender dresses. Both genders would then assemble in the locker room and hold the coach’s pre-game meeting.
D. Following the game and the coach’s post game meeting, where separate facilities are not available, the second gender group enters the locker room and undresses, while the first group waits outside until they have undressed and left the room. Once the second group leaves, the first group enters the locker room and undresses.
NOTE: Taking turns is a means of ‘reasonable accommodation’, so neither gender group is favored, nor is “the ones who always have to wait” and it’s fair.
Failing to establish some type of similar procedure, or failure to seriously consider the privacy issues will likely lead to complaints and/or lawsuits. By being proactive on this issue, everyone [coaches, players, officials, volunteers and parents] can enjoy the sport without the worry of legal actions or the invasion of privacy concerns arising.
Lastly, reinforce to all players, coaches, officials, volunteers and parents that your organizations are going to take this issue seriously. It is not acceptable under USA Hockey’s By-Laws -Policies on Physical and Sexual Abuse – for members to be observing the opposite gender while they dress or undress. Members and volunteers who violate USA Hockey’s policies, or who violate the privacy rights of others, could be subject to appropriate discipline.
Your attention to this topic and to preventing problems arising from this issue will be greatly appreciated. We are grateful for your cooperation and assistance in providing an enjoyable, safer experience for USA Hockey’s membership.

December 17, 2008Gender Equity Policy – Co-Ed Locker Rooms [Kent Valley Hockey Association (Kent, Washington)]
The issue of co-ed dressing arrangements in locker rooms continues to come up, and Kent Valley Hockey Association has come up with the following Policy based on USA Hockey’s recommendation. Make certain that two properly screened adults are present in locker room settings to supervise. Arrange to provide supervisors who are of the same sex as the children they are to protect. Please follow Coaching Ethics guidelines. These guidelines are for Pee Wee levels and above, and may be followed at Mite and Squirt if requested.
NOTE: Taking turns is a means of ‘reasonable accommodation’ that make the policy fair, so neither gender group is favored, nor is one group “the ones who always have to wait”.
Lastly, reinforce to all players, coaches, officials, volunteers and parents that your organizations are going to take this issue seriously. It is not acceptable under USA Hockey’s By-Laws-Policies on Physical and Sexual Abuse for members to be observing the opposite gender while they dress or undress. Minutes from SHAW Coaches’ Meeting 12/1/2008
December 6, 2008MITRON
- Thoughts about Mitron staff run practices
- What would coaches like to see at next Mitron coaching clinic
- Should we continue with Mitron next year?
All the coaches in attendance agreed we should try and maintain using Mitron for SHAW.
Goalie Clinics: Ideas on how to improve
- Look at USA Hockey web site for goalie drills. Check out this web site: http://www.usahockey.com/usahgoalies/default.aspx?NAV=AF_02&ID=223758
- Look into possibility of bringing in a goalie coach at a cost.
Coaches Input
- Coaches would like to bring back the ice chip program. We would need help from all coaches to make this work.
- Goalie equipment in storage needs to be gone over. A lot of unusable of equipment in storage.
- Look into USA hockey program for equipment donation.
- Coaches would like to see the Pettit Oval brought back again and would like to see at least 2 practices a week.
Open Session
- What happened to all the black pucks? Each coach should have each player bring 2 pucks and add them to the bucket(s).
- Stress for need of a coach/adult in the locker room at all times. Coach or an adult in locker rooms which includes power skating and recruit a mom to monitor girls locker room if needed.
- If you take your team to watch the MSOE hockey team. Team gets 1 hour of free ice. Cost for games is $4.
- Invite director of recruiting on recruiting ideas. (Ex. High interest days at kids schools)
- Reminder SHAW team colors for Peewee and above is black breezers, black helmets, and black or red gloves.
- REMINDER: Skating and acceleration camp Dec 29,30, 31. Check web site.
VP-on-Ice [Todd Oleson]
VP on ice wanted coaches to remember to use constructive dialogue when talking to refs. And NEVER, EVER touch a ref for any reason.
