What is full hockey gear?

October 20, 2009

hockey-equipment

All Devos should have the following gear:

  • Helmet with full cage or full visor: this is the most important piece of safety equipment. Make sure it is HECC certified and it fits properly.
  • Mouth guard: all SHAW skaters are required to use an internal mouth guard.
  • Hockey Skates: Devos and mini-mites will probably need a new pair of skates every year because they will out grow their old ones. Practicing once a week and the occasional public skating session barely breaks in brand new boots. There is nothing wrong with a pair of used skates if the uppers and the blades are in good condition. Get them sharpened at a reputable pro shop. Always dry the blades after use.
  • Stick: Don’t spend a fortune. I recommend a wooden youth stick with a straight blade. Young players may hold the stick left handed for one practice and right for the next. Let them experiment until they figure out what is more natural.
  • Shoulder pads
  • Elbow pads
  • Gloves
  • Pants  [breezers]
  • Shin pads
  • Suspenders or belt
  • Jock or Jill preferably with Velcro to hold up socks
  • Garter belt
  • Jersey: one practice jersey will be provided.
  • Hockey socks
  • Duffle bag or hockey bag

Equipment is expensive, but it doesn’t have to break the bank. The big investment is the helmet and full cage; Consider going to a local pro shop to get advice before buying one. I would buy one locally. Make sure it fits. If it doesn’t fit, it doesn’t protect.

If you can find used skates with good uppers and blades (not rusty) that fit, they are probably a good deal. I have a few pairs of barely used youth skates. I will be happy to loan them to you if they fit. Let me know if you are interested.

Local pro shops have all the gear you need, but the price may be quite high. More advice follows. Read the rest of this entry »

Devo team news and Summary of Managers and Board Meetings

October 19, 2009

Devo Team News

  • Thanks to Chris Reineck for agreeing to serve as Devo Team Manager
  • There are only 12 screen printed devo jerseys so they are available for the first 12 new skaters who register. Carisa is ordering 25 more, so eveyone will get a new practice jersey when they are available. Returning skaters should bring their old jersey to practice just in case.
  • If we are short, I have a handful of jerseys that I can provide to anyone who needs one.
  • Devos have the option to purchase the official SHAW jersey for $52 (includes tackle twill team name & player number.)
  • The Devo registration deposit is $100. The estimated total cost for the season is around $300 which includes the official game jersey fee.
  • SHAW Officers and volunteers will be available at 9 am Oct 31 to assist with SHAW registration, getting players dressed and answering questions.
  • First practice is Saturday 31 October 10:00-11:00.
  • Adult on-ice volunteers must be cleared by a coach and must wear hockey or figure skates (no speed skates) and a hockey helmet.
  • I will provide snack and beverage.

These are my notes from the Managers Meeting and the SHAW Board Meeting of 10-19-09. I try to more or less accurately summarize items of interest to me or to the Devo program.

Board of Directors Meeting 10-19-09

  • Called to order at 6:45. Adjourned around 8:00.
  •  Rink Committee (Chuck Smalley, Tim Seivert & Kim Youngblood) Chuck Smalley reporter.
    • Chuck Smalley will meet with county to discuss a second sheet of ice at Wilson Park
    • A scaled back plan (similar to the version the architects drew up some years ago), but with a slant roof.
    • Chuck said that our primary need is for practice ice during prime time.
    • The glycol cooling system of the current rink will also cover the 2nd rink
    • the plan includes 8 new locker rooms
    • SHAW can make money with summer rentals to roller hockey, volleyball
    • SHAW may bring the proposal before the county board this year.
    • Total project cost $3 million.  Chuck believes that County will approve the plan once we raise a big chuck of the money.
    • We have about $500,000 invested in cds.
    • Spread the word to the teams.
  • Admirals vs Wolves on Sept 25th. Carisa reported.
    • $145 chuck-a-puck
    • $1500 concessions
  •  Concession Stand raised $1500 for SHAW last year. That money will be used to defray banquet cost.
  •  SHAW Jerseys & Master List of SHAW Jersey Numbers: Prudie Oleson reporter.
    • Prudie maintains the list of SHAW jersey numbers and has developed a system to greatly reduce or eliminate squabbles over player’s numbers. This works up though High School only.
    • Contact Prudie to order jerseys from Dunn’s
  •  Team Coaches on Roster. Kathy Erickson asked if managers wants to limit the number of coaches (e.g. three) for whom SHAW would reimburse the USA Hockey/WAHA registration fee. General consensus opposed a limit. Team mangers should report the coaches’ names to Prudie who will divide the cost among the team.
  •  SHAW Policy Binder: Prudie reported. The policy binder is missing from the main office.  If you borrowed it, please return it. Otherwise, the Exec Board will have to review meeting minutes to re-create all the policies.
  •  O&H Danish Kringle Fundraiser: Perry Peterson reported.
    • The Kringle sales runs from Oct 19 to Nov 6. Each kringle costs $7.75; $2 will go toward the skater’s ice fees.
    • Flavors: pumpkin carmel, apple, almond, blueberry, cherry, chocolate pecan, cream cheese, pecan, raspberry
    • If you are interested, see Devo team manager for an order form.
    • Make check out to SHAW
    • Put skater’s name & phone number on memo line of check
    • Orders will not be processed without payment
    • Place envelope with order form and payment in Fundraising Slot on SHAW Office door.
    • All orders must be picked up on Nov 14th
    • For more info contact PPETER8840@aol.com
  •  Monique Hoth expressed concern that cleaning day and other activities eligible for organization volunteer hours would lead to volunteer shortages before the Cairns Showcase. Carisa expressed her hope that it would work out. Monique received clarification that 10 volunteer hours are for team and 5 for the organization. Cairns volunteer hours are extra as are concession stand duties.
  • The Executive Board discussed proper locker room supervision. They will not mandate how individual teams handle supervision. They expect that each team will work out a plan to ensure that players are supervised in  the locker room.

Jim Paull: SHAW’s 1st Director of Coaches

October 16, 2009

SHAW Alumni Profile – Jim Paull

Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame – 1983

Jim Paull, an extremely dedicated former “Yooper,” is a very deserving member of the prestigious Wisconsin Hall of Fame. He left his snowshoes in Calumet, Michigan in the late 1950’s, but brought his love for the game of hockey and fierce determination to “do it right” to Milwaukee and Wisconsin’s youth hockey was a huge benefactor.

When he arrived in Milwaukee to start a 40 year career at Allen Bradley, he needed a job but didn’t need any help with his hockey. A natural, slick, skater since he could walk, Jim soon got involved in the local hockey scene, or what there was of it. He instantly the great potential for hockey and became one of the original organizers of SHAW. This group has grown to become on of the premier hockey associations in Wisconsin. With a few of his “Yooper” friends, he was able to give SHAW a jump start compared to the other hockey organizations.

During his tenure with SHAW, he was the first Director of Coaches and served on the Board of Directors for many years. He also coached for many teams at different levels for 20 years, helping to bring 4 State titles. These teams were the 1975 Bantams, the 1977 Pee Wees, the 1985 High School team and the 1985 Midgets.

After he passed on his demanding SHAW duties to others, he coached Milwaukee Pius High School and brought them the private school JV championship in their second year. In addition to coaching, he found time to play for the Milwaukee Admirals from 1970-72, the Milwaukee Wings in the Badger State league from 1974-77, was the player coach for the Milwaukee Oaks in 1977 and finished as a player coach for the 1978 Milwaukee Wings.

His dedication to the younger players is legend in Milwaukee. As a coach, he was not only a constant motivator and great teacher, but also took a personal interest in all his players. He often picked them up at home for practice in order to make sure they were ontime. His motto was, “No player left behind.”

A huge Detroit Red Wings fan, Jim started a momento collection of Red Wing items as a child in Claumet. When he moved to Milwaukee, that collection was put on hold for many years. His collection is now truly impressive, collecting everything connected with the team except for the players themselves. The collection occupies his entire basement and the main focus is his favorite player, the great Gordie Howe.

Jim was way ahead of his time in Wisconsin Hockey circles and is richly deserving of his induction into the Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame.

Just FYI: Cross-Ice or Half Ice is the trend for mites

October 16, 2009

Email from Ozaukee Ice Dogs

The majority of the clubs in Region 5 are doing cross-ice at the mite level to some degree. Here at Ozaukee, we are starting games in December. We will have 3 cross-ice mite teams with 8-9 players who are first year mites. Our intention is to skate cross ice games early with a few full ice at the end of the season. Our cross ice format will be 3-3 with a goalie and regular sized goals.

I will be working with our board members and mite coaching staff to get some games set up. Please reply if you are interested in playing outside your club at this level and format. Please list your club and if you have open ice time. Our scheduler or myself will then get in touch with you.

We are looking to embrace the cross ice direction and keep this fun for the players and encourage their development!

From the SHAW Concession Stand Committee [important!]

October 11, 2009

Dear Shaw Families:

Congratulations on making it through tryouts. On behalf of the Concession Stand Committee as well as the Shaw Organization, we are excited to inform all families of the exciting opportunity being extended to all families.

As a result of much work on behalf of the committee, the new procedure will be set forth as follows:  All parents will be required to fulfill volunteer hours within the concession stand.

  • October:   High School, Varsity & JV
  • November: Bantam Levels A & B
  • December:  Pee Wee Levels A & B
  • January: Squirt Levels A, B & C
  • February:  MiteLevels A & B
  • March: Mini Mite/Devo

The month will be divided among the families with the help of managers designating a concession scheduler.  This person will receive volunteer hours for their work in slotting families throughout the week/month.  Any problem should be brought to the attention of the main scheduler (Brian Williams) or the need to schedule in a different month.  If a family does not show for their chosen time slot, a $50.00 fee will be assessed and added directly to your ice fees.

Hours of operation are:

  • Monday:  Closed
  • Tuesday through Friday: 6:00 p.m to 9:00 p.m.
  • Weekends: Vary based on game/tournament schedule
  •  (All games need to be covered!)
  •  (Special events/tournaments ie Badger State Jam, Coffrin Cup, Mite State Tournament, Cairins will all be covered by team in month of event.)

Shaw offers many non-mandatory ways for parents to help off-set the rising cost of ice fees.  Although this is mandatory, it directly benefits your family. (Please understand that other extra-curricular sports require parent volunteer participation.)

At the end of the season, all families will receive a Year-end Statement listing the gross & net profit of the stand.  The net proceeds, and this is after all costs are taken out, shall be divided equally among the families similar to the Brewer credit.  You will all know what is being spent and what you will potentially receive.

Managers will be invited to attend an up-coming meeting to answer any questions that families or teams may have.

This concession stand not only is of benefit to parents and children who are there for long hours during the season, it also reflects the attitude of our organization.

CONCESSION STAND COMMITTEE

Nov 7th — Many Hands Lighten the Load

October 11, 2009

Hello Shaw Families:

In an effort to continue to make our rink family friendly, we are organizing and asking for help to wash down the bleachers.  As you all know, this is something that needs to get done.

The county has offered to provide doughnuts and Shaw will provide coffee and hot cocoa.  Consider this a great opportunity for Shaw families to socialize with new and existing members.

We will begin at 8:00 in the morning on November 7th and go no later than noon, if not sooner.  Please consider volunteering.  Bring family, friends, anyone that can help. Let’s keep the momentum going and turn Shaw into an organization that we can all be proud of.

 Thanks in advance.

Bunny Blaszak & Sue Armbruster [Directors of Special Events]

Devo Manager

October 8, 2009

Thanks to Chris and John Reineck who will serve as team managers. Devo managers have 2 main roles:

  • Attend Managers’ and Board Meetings and communicate information from the team to SHAW and vice versa.
  • Keep the team roster and contact information up to date.

I want to efficiently use ice time and beef up supervision in the locker room and on the ice. I will ask the manager to coordinate these kinds of things:

  • Getting bumpers, nets, pucks and cones on and off the ice
  • Tracking who is on the ice (devos and volunteers)
  • Ensuring that children are always under adult supervision in the locker room and on the ice; making sure that no devo is allowed to leave the ice surface unattended

Managers make sure things get done, but should enlist the help of other parents for tasks like these:

  • Creating a team snack schedule
  • Filling water bottles
  • Planning off-ice events such as a “get acquainted” Parents Party, a Team Holiday Party, end of the season party, etc.
  •  Admirals ticket pick up

Wanted: team manager

October 7, 2009

I have one assistant coach. We need a team manager.

  • Are you free on Monday nights — the third Monday of the month between 6:00 and 8:00 or so? The main duty of Devo Manager is attending meetings.  Managers represent the team at Manager and Board meetings and report relevant news from those meetings to the team.
  • Managers Meetings are every third Monday of the month at 6:00 PM in a front locker room or in the main lobby of Wilson Park rink. These meetings are followed immediately by the SHAW Board of Directors meeting at 6:30.
  • Meetings are mandatory. We can twist arms to arrange a sub, if the manager can’t make it. There are no Managers’ Meetings or Board Meetings in April, July or December.
  • The manager will keep the team roster up to date, share contact info with parents, set up the snack schedule, get volunteers to drag bumpers, nets, cones and pucks on and off the ice at each practice.
  • Please volunteer to serve as Devo Manager if your schedule allows. I need help.

First Practice

  • I will bring the snack.
  • Devos will begin on Saturday, 31 October at 10:00. New skaters should arrive early for help getting dressed. I will be at the rink at 9:00.

Call or email if you have questions. I check my voicemail regularly. I check my email a few times a week.
